Book Discussion

All are invited to participate in a booktalk about the book On Your Mark by Thomas R. Guskey. Copies are available on request to Central Office. This book is a great way to prompt a discussion about what is and isn’t working with our current grading practices. This will pave the way for discussions about grading in a mastery-based learning environment. Here is an overview of the book from the publisher:
“Create and sustain a learning environment where students thrive and stakeholders are accurately informed of student progress. Clarify the purpose of grades, craft a vision statement aligned with this purpose, and discover research-based strategies to implement effective grading and reporting practices. Identify policies and practices that render grading inaccurate, and understand the role grades play in students’ future success and opportunities.”

We hope you can join us!

Advisory Meeting

Parents & Guardians,
Yesterday our students met for the first time in something called Advisory. Modeled after Responsive Classroom’s morning meeting, with which students are familiar from elementary school, Advisory is a small group of students and a staff member that will meet for 20 minutes each month between now and the end of the year. This program is a direct response to our school climate surveys from last year that told us we could be doing more to connect students to students and students to staff in our building. Some advisory periods will involve games that build connection and rapport among members of the advisory. Others will include academic goal setting. Still others will engage student voice in problem solving a school related issue. Feedback from students and staff yesterday was overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to our next advisory meeting on February 17th!

Sincerely,
Moran Administration

Unity Conversation Starter

Some parents of grade 7 Art students are going to see some pretty crazy (colorful and abstract) art work coming home. First let me say, if it makes it home they are probably pretty proud of it. So before you get out those refrigerator magnets and accidently hang it upside down it might be a good time to learn to talk about art. Keep in mind that Art is a pretty open ended subject so “open ended questions” are perfect. Here are some suggestions:

What was your assignment? (to create Unity, a Pattern depending on the assignment).
How did you start?
Why did you… use these colors, choose those shapes, make those lines…
What materials did you use to make this?
What is your favorite part? Would you change anything?
What part of the work turned out just the way that you planned? Did you know it was going to look like this or were you surprised?
…is this the top?? – just kidding –
